The lake was created in the mid-nineteenth century by construction of a dam across the river Bednja. The lake gives a distinctive character to Trakošćan. The surface of the lake is about 17 ha and the lake itself is about 2.5 meters deep.
There are a number of fish species living in it: carp, amur, pike, catfish, trout, and other fish. Trakošćan Lake is an exclusive fishing spot, because in this picturesque ambience, fishing is a true pleasure for every fisherman.
Since its inception, the lake had a dual function - economic, as a pond, and esthetic, as a decorative element that is common in romantic park architecture. During winter, the surface of the lake is frozen and the ice lasts for about three months. Along the lake there are hiking trails that transform this space into a unique promenade.
Fairy Pathway
Around the lake Trakošćan there is a promenade called Fairy Pathway. It starts at the bottom of the castle, at the entrance to the complex. It is about five kilometers long and one could easily traverse the path within two hours. The instructive trail includes twenty points, while the information point and its surroundings serve as a reprieve during the walk. There, one could also get various information on weekends during the summer months.
The educational trail offers stories about natural (biological and landscape) landmarks. Here one can find out various interesting things about the park-forest and the surrounding area, forest and meadow communities, wetland and aquatic herbs, Trakošćan Lake, garden features and so on...
The Fairy Pathway simultaneously educates children and grown-ups on how to recognize a variety of trees, shrubs, herbs and animals. The park forest plan map provides an overview of the charted contents and spots along the educational trail, forest openings, rules of behavior, and more.
