The Zrinski and Drašković conflict

The large portrait on the left depicts Nikola Zrinski, a short-term owner of the Trakošćan fortress in the seventeenth century.

Not one hundred years after they had acquired it, the Drašković family lost for the first time the Trakošćan manorial estate. Gašpar II, Peter's son, mortgaged Trakošćan, despite protests by his relatives, to his future son-in-law Nikola Zrinski under the title of his daughter Elizabeth's dowry. However, in 1651, after five years of marriage Elizabeta died without an offspring. Subsequently, Gašpar asked Zrinski to return Trakošćan, but his request was not granted since he did not repay the owed sum of money. In the ensuing armed conflicts, Zrinski first lost and then regained Trakošćan, but finally handed it over to the Drašković family after the outstanding debt was settled in court.
