Trakošćan Castle

Trakošćan is located in the municipality of Bednja. It is surrounded by mountains Macelj (N), Ravna Gora (E), Ivančica (SE) and Strahinčica (W).

The present appearance of the Trakošćan Castle was preceded by numerous construction phases. The most significant were those from the nineteenth century when Trakošćan was completely transformed.

In 1953, Trakošćan, with its gardens, lake and park forest, was declared a cultural monument and became a museum. The museum collection includes furniture, paintings, weapons, photographs etc., originating from the fifteenth to nineteenth centuries and exhibited on four floors. The rooms are arranged as original interior ensembles.

The interior of the castle is a thesaurus of the original historicist interior settings from the second half of the nineteenth century and it is protected as a cultural asset. Trakošćan is not only an architectural monument and a museum but also a landscape monument.

The forest park with the lake and gardens as a whole makes an impressive picture of one of the best preserved castles in Croatia. The Trakošćan country estate complex forms an important part of the cultural and economic history of Croatia.
